DPRK Ground Forces Rally! Under the cover of night the North Koreans are swiftly taking ground at the FLOT. While their Air Forces struggle to maintain air superiority, it appears the Tank Battalions do not require Air Power to advance south.

Meanwhile the South Korean Ground Forces are in retreat. They await effective CAS and AI strikes which is the crutch of defending ground and eventually pushing back the DPRK Horde. We will be entering the Twilight hours of the morning and destroying more Airbases in preparation of the morning ground attacks.

So I ran some tests for Aardvark 1 ship using 24ea Mk82s against Kimpo. I dropped in pairs at 900' intervals. If you attack from the SE corner of the East runway to the NW corner of the N runway you that's a nice spread and took out 1 runway but not both. That's somewhere between 10 to 15 degree diagonal slash. Also the airport hangar and facilities areas won't get pounded very hard that way.

Just thinking out loud here, maybe 2 ships diagonal as described above for runways and 2 ships diagonal for facilities plus runways where the spacing will be much tighter due to the angle being greater, would level the most destruction.  I still think the runways are the main thing so maybe 30 to 40 degree diagonal slash for the second element and shorter ripple spacing but long enough to go from the terminal area and across both runways. It would be better to attack from NW to SE to ensure utter runway destruction but I think that may put the Aardvarks in more danger. Probably smarter to get the bombs off, get clean, and get the hell out of there instead of circling.

Anyway, just food for thought! =D

I made a few maps/tentative plan for fun and to make my briefing easier.

Panther 1 SEAD Flight

Mixed loadout: AGM-65D, CBU-87

Our primary target is the 434th Air Defense Battalion.

bFb4Rwk.png

They are using captured NATO equipment, so they will be easy to identify. We must destroy the AN/MPQ-46 Radar to neutralize the HAWK. It looks like a tiny box with mickey mouse ears. 2 Humvees carry Stinger manpads, (similar SA-14)

nCBVdr9.png

The HAWK is currently encamped at Majeon-Ri city on the outskirts of Northern Seoul, blocking access to Kimpo AB. They have orders to move north to Camp Casey, east of Mandumi AB. They could take an eastern or western route and it is unclear when they will move.

492yZTt.png

Ingress:

Low altitude to avoid alerting HAWK and attracting scramblers (MiG-23) from Kimpo and Mandumi

If we are overwhelmed by fighters we will defend back east to the mountains and seek support.

Attack #1: HAWK

Heading 200. Peek over mountains, tally Majeon-Ri. If the HAWK has moved scan east and west using GMT. Fire Maverick at radar, slice back into mountains.

8z3qLfF.png

xENKnRP.png

Once the Hawk is neutralized we will either:

A. hunt for other SAMs vicinity Kimpo AB, climbing to +15,000ft (Extremely high manpad threat area)

B. remain NOE, attack secondary target: 437th AAA Battalion stationed at Mandumi Airbase, in order to soften them up before Fury's attack.

"B" is the most likely option, as there are no other known SAM battalions in Seoul

dNMXf3s.png

Attack #2: AAA Mandumi AB

Heading 350

Exact positions of the AAA at the airbase are unknown.

We'll hit big guns or the Fire Can if we can spot it. Fire Mavericks at stand-off range or run along the river and loft CBU's on groups of targets. Slice back into valley.

Great work gas. One point: disabling the firecan will not prevent he guns operating, they will fire visually instead (this is much less accurate though)

I haven't had the chance to conduct a full Threat analysis yet, but i can tell you now, i will not be leading the aardvarks in from the SE over the centre of Seoul. the amount of AAA and SAMs there make it prohibitive.

I'm already nervous about overflying the northern end of the City  as it is, and if it werent for the mig airbases up north, id be inclined to come in from the north.

Most likely i will be encouraging a Medium-to-High Altitude CCRP pass from East to West, off North and back to steer.

My main requests from the SEAD flight would be the Hawk (if found), followed by AAA immediately around Kimpo.  Even without Firecans, a AAA battalion may fire blindly into the air, and the sheer quantity of emplacements constitutes a significant threat.

I will be looking into the loadout to this effect; whilst id love to perform a low altitude strike, the terrain and threats do not permit this.

I'll need to look up some runway digrams from BMS before i write up my briefing (it will not be as clever or as visual as GasMan's - I dont have the talent!), but you've inspired me to publish a basic outline of my intent so we can brief quicker and pass overall ideas to those involved.

the above link is a simplified rendition of my intent. we will approach the runway from the NE and run-in with a final attack heading of 234.

individual assignments as follows:

1) will hit the southern entrances to the airbase along Taxiway B1. impact spacing is expaected to be pairs, 100ft. this will put 2 bombs from centre runway 32R along the taxiway to 2 bombs centre 32L.

2) will be used as backup to divert, but is expected to hit the Tower block . impact spacing and profile identical.

3) will perform identical approach, target will be centre taxi way D1. bombs should start/finish centre of runways.

4) will hit northern runway along taxiway G1 with same profile.

flight will egress north immediately upon bombs gone and marshal steer 6.

note to package leader - i would prefer to reposition my IP to allow for this run-in, but if not, i will make a final roll-in before target to allow the execution of this plan.

this plan is also contingent upon the success of the SEAD mission - an alternate target outside this AO is reccommended if SEAD or jammers are unable to open a door.

Ghostdog, what are your thoughts of heading approximately north and doing a slashing attack that way and break off to the east or west depending on threats?

I'm trying to avoid further north than I have to. Don't want the nearby airbases to spot a juicy aardvark to scramble on, and I'd rather not egress south or east into any part of Seoul.

This briefing is unfamiliar and therefore scary. What's a Jacob? Who are all these people? What's even going on here?! D=

Nevertheless, let's see about dusting off the ol' Warthog, shall we?

Great to have you VKing!

Sometimes we inject a running joke into the briefing to have a little fun with it. Since this is a twilight strike, the reference for the operation is the teen movie Twilight. I think Jacob and Edward are the main protagonists, therefore they are prominent in Operation Sparkly Fangs.

But joke briefings aside, Seoul is covered by AAA, deadly MANPADs and SHORADs, mobile HAWKs, SA-5s, and a horde of MiG-29s, MiG-23s, MiG-21s, and Su-7s. This is an extremely dangerous mission, despite us knocking out Seoul Airbase last week. But we have 28 people to give it a go. It should be fun!

Ghostdog, I need some clarification please.

1. In the attack diagram then is #2 the southern most bird?

2. Are you wanting #2 to drop pairs from starting at the first building, through the East apron, through the runways and finally through the West apron?

3. You said "backup to divert" and I don't know what that means?

4. You said "hit the tower block" and I don't know what that means either?

Oh, I think I see now. Uhm first though I am color vision impaired. The lines with half an arrowhead look violet-ish to me, the ones with tick marks look red-ish.

I was thinking the violet lines were the planes, but I now the red lines are and the ticks show the start and stop points of the bombs coming off.

I think you want my bombs to fall only on the buildings marked TWR on the North Apron, unless #1 is unable then make #1's run (which is the southernmost taxiway entrance)?
