  1. I played the beta (it was free to play over the weekend). I probably put in 10 or 12 hours. Game play 2 modes Terrorist Hunt: 5 man team shoots AI baddies that continuously spawn. Lonewolf mode also available. Multiplayer: 5v5, one set of defenders, protecting 1 or 2 pre-spawned bomb sites. The Cool - Classes are all unique, even to the Offense and Defense. Do cool stuff like reinforce walls, build barricades, set c4 traps, use radio controlled drones to scout around, or set demo charges to watch it all crash down. Each class can only be used by one member on the team. This encourages teamwork to use strengths of each class to win. Eg. The 'ID' class has a electronic sensor that picks up the bomb's location, and other electronics like drones or traps set by the enemy. There is a very effective shield class that provides great cover, but needs weapons support behind it to advance. - Your teammates are a mixed bag. The ones that you get along with will generally stay on from round to round, so as a group, you get better by trying and dying. Once you get into that groove, things get really fun. - Explode everything. Many parts of the buildings can be blown up. Doorway look like a bottleneck? Plant a breaching charge on the wall 8 feet away, or blow your way in from the next room! Room heavily fortified with non-destructible brick walls surrounding it? Blast in through the ceiling! Be careful though, the Defense has a class with a heartbeat sensor, detecting your movements nearby! - Rounds lasted under 5 minutes generally, add a couple for unit selection. Matching making was fast, not taking more than 30 seconds to find a team. The Expected - They have a store to unlock stuff. You earn 'Renown' (experience) through your matches. You unlock the new operators as you go, you start as a not so special 'Recruit'. Weapons have attachments to unlock,, ditch that iron sight for a red dot etc. Camo patterns to barbie it up are available too. Experience seemed to come at a slow, but fair clip. If I had a kick ass match and my team won, I earned 200 Renown, it took 500 to unlock the first operator from each division, GSG 9, Spetsnaz, SAS, SWAT and GIGN. It was 1000 for the next, 1500(?) after that. It cost between 150-200 for a new sight attachment. You get the idea. The Meh - I couldn't shake the counter-strike feel. Now, as I say that, I'm not a deep lover of what the Battlefields, COD's have become over the years, so your mileage may vary on that. - The two game modes, Multiplayer or Terrorist Hunt, while fun, were the same objective every time. Either hunt the bomb, or defend it. They didn't have any other modes to spice it up a little bit. I ended up noticing across the maps that the bombs spawn in maybe 3 or 4 different spots, basically you check there first and wow, that was soooooo exciting its right where i expected it to be! /sarcasm However, for as linear as this is, the way each team puts up defenses can make it very interesting. Just as the way each offensive unit plans their attack can make it a great match. - In the beta they had a small problem with spawn teamkillers, and no apparent system to report them or punish them. I ran into it 4 or 5 times in the two days i was playing. Annoying. But you can just kill him without penalty, so, there's that. - Matchmaking would sometimes lag out, taking a minute to wake up before either getting you a team, or kicking you back to the menu screen. Had a couple glitches mid game of boots back to menu with error messages and servers not being available to even find multiplayer games, I'm sure they will be ironed out. - Your teammates are a mixed bag. Some will derp off. Others will stick with you. It's tough on offense if the person that (randomly) spawns with the 1 defuse kit decides to go Rambo. You need him to capture the objectives. You can get the kit when he dies, but, that's a pain. - The game runs one of the Clients as the 'Host'. If the 'Host' leaves the match, everyone is kicked out(after the round) and is back to finding another random game. So if you were having a good game with your team, but the other team had the 'host' who leaves, say goodbye once the round is over (or friend them with the Ubisoft -UPlay client.That software was an unnecessary layer, we have Steam already.) Overall, tl;dr I enjoyed the new blowy-uppy parts of the game. It's limited replay-ability definitely doesn't warrant a $59.99 price tag. A steam sale for $39 would be about right, but this normally doesn't happen for about 6-12 months after a game releases. I'll play the long game on this one, I'm not itching to go back and play the same round over and over again. Given a better price, it could be on my list as a great game to burn some time on.

  3. Sounds like the idea of 'Information Request' needs more grooming. By joining TS / skype and verbally asking an officer for information about something on the spot, you can't possibly think you'll be getting the best information, nor should that officer be expected to know what they don't know or recall with accuracy immediately. Refine your definition and requirement of 'information request' to mandate a written mail with specifics surrounding the request to be evaluated by the appropriate Officer group. Set an expected turn time on the request, perhaps one week. This gives time enough for an officer to see the request, and a few days to sync with another officer/reg/member to gather any details left outstanding. I feel there is an imbalance between what is expected of officers, and what is actually defined somewhere - based on all these fucking threads. You want to start adding to the 'government accountability'? Better start learning how to interact with it in a reasonable manner.
  4. Having read the book, to me it certainly didn't end with any warm and fuzzies. It should be interesting to see how they present Red Wing and the overall tone of the film. I don't see many flicks nowadays, this i'll be waiting for though.
  5. 1. Know that this game is a time investment. Real time. Training to fly those ships, overly simply stated, is a matter of purchasing skill books to learn required skills required to fly those ships. The nice thing is that your training doesn't stop when you are not logged in, its always running as long as you keep your 'queue' full. To get those crazy ships, frankly, without buying a character, it could take you a half a year or more specifically training for one of those ships. 2. As previously stated, the game is slow for most of the time, but you are occupied flying places, researching / reading / planning, what you're doing next. During combat, PVE or PVP, its generally a quick affair, though some PVE can be more drawn out lasting 20min or more. 3. Game economy is interesting. There is always money to be made killing AI in asteroid belts, or special 'anomalies' around space in every system. You can move goods from one area to the next, work the low prices, higher prices, supply and demand. You can train into manufacturing, build stuff from materials mined by mining (or bought on the market). You could also kill humans then loot their ships of gear plus the pilots tears... 4. Paying monthly is all that is required. If you get good enough at making 'ISK' you can buy PLEX (gametime) on the market and play for free. Alternately, if your hard pressed for ISK, you can buy a plex and sell it on the market for some cash. 5. A bunch of us are very active. Personally I'm on almost everyday for several hours. If you want my recommendation as a player who was basically a 30 day old character before I joined the UO corp - spend 30 days in one of the good learning corps like Eve University. After that, you've hopefully picked a progression you want to follow, look us up. As a extremely low skilled player, there isn't a lot of productive stuff you can do where our corp is now. We're happy to help you out with questions, but I doubt any of us could promise to come fly with you on a regular basis due to the logistics of it. It's hard to explain that part without being in the game and having a feel for just how expansive (and dangerous) it is. Your first 30 should be running the very good tutorial missions which give you a bunch of good rewards (ships, skill books, ISK, etc) but more importantly, training on all the things there is in EVE. At that point you're training into a ship that can be fitted with good kit and can handle itself. That's when you can take this game and do whatever you want with it. As for the 'banter' going to and fro in the thread, long story short our corp was messed with (lots of cloak and dagger in eve too, kinda cool, kinda a pain in the ass... lol). The corp struck back in said cloak and dagger manner, achieving devastating results. Thus the ill will being exhibited. Oh the joys and perils of EVE.   6. Three fucking cheers man. Very well said. Combine this with Rambo's suggestion and meld it into a 15min video with a Q/A sign off by a qualified Reg/Member. I think we'll have a great, short intro and set of expectations the new player will understand while not delaying entry by a substantial means into playing the game. Just a quick point to note, when you first started playing at UO, what did that look like? Did a friend get you to join the server one night, show you around and babysit you a little bit until you could operate on your own? Did you stumble upon a populated server that emphasized Maturity, Friendship, Fun, Professionalism, Respect, Cooperation, Teamwork and Courtesy and decide, yes, this is where i want to play? In both instances, you (download gigs upon gigs) load up and then you're at the mercy of the people around you showing you the ropes (and hopefully find a few with the patience not to strangle you with said rope). If you want to require an introduction to UO, might it make sense to watch a demo video while in the waiting room, have an 'instructor' ask you some questions to test for knowledge of the video's content, update a tag and be on the server? I personally see an issue where a new player has to wait for an instructor to hold a class in order to join the server. Could it be they get a same day class, sure. Could it be 2 days before an instructor is online when that player is? A week? Lets not forget about real life schedules. On the same vein, I don't believe its fair to require instructors to be spending 40min to an hour doing this every single day . TL:dr - Shorter video, instructor to 'test for knowledge' prior to server access. - Video content to focus on Expectations while on the server. Highlight player reputation as a key aspect to playing on the server. - Keep scope of video in check - this is to set expectations, not a 'new to ARMA' tutorial. - There will always be new players, treat them with respect and give them a chance to learn instead of leaving them to break SOP without first knowing it.

  8. Rambo summed it up nicely. I'd emphasize that he can be voted back in upon his return with the demonstrated activity and demeanor representative of Regularship. I can recall in recent memory this happening with several 'old' regulars.

  10. It's all what you want to do with the game. What you find fun might not always be the most profitable, or maybe it will. As most have said, without skilling up into a viable role, the first month or two will likely be a paid adventure. Still, I think the game is worth it. I ended up subbing another account. Without going too far off topic, if you're gonna do it and want to pay your own way HAVE A PLAN. Then STICK TO IT. Lots of guys can help set up a skill plan to get you where you need to be as soon as possible. If you start to stray it will benefit you in learning the game and probably appreciating it more, but it will take you a significant amount of time longer to arrive at your goal. Also, I've heard depending where you sign up for the game, you can get a 'booster' of some kind that increases your learning of skills for your new character for the first two weeks by a stupid amount.   12. I've stepped away from ARMA for a while and have fallen victim to EVE, so that is the recent experience I can talk to. As CEO, Boon has recently lead the Corporation out of troubled waters with two significant alliances while not burning bridges with our departure. As of yesterday, his background work talking to other coalition leaders has seen us invited to a major alliance which should serve as a great home / fit for the corporation for some time to come. As I read this thread, the points against Boon seem to center around not liking him due to his attitude or how he comes across in the forums. If that's the case, come out and say it, then prove it prevents him from doing his job. Otherwise, this poll is a waste of time.
  13. No other info in this decision? Skills? Generally if your mining in a group, yea the Hulk hands down. Soloing with a degree of safety or attentiveness to your ship, then the Mackinaw. Or you can beast tank the Skiff. Its like anything in this game, right tool for the right job.
