  1. Whereas- According to the Charter 5.3.5: Officers may not have any privileges or powers exceeding their tasks. Therefore- So that Officers do not have the privilege of a 72 hour grace period not afforded Regulars if the 5.2.8 poll passes I propose also amending section 5.3.9 of the Charter. Current 5.3.9: Any Officer may resign their position as an Officer by post in the UO Forum. The resignation takes effect in 72 hours unless said Officer retracts their resignation by post in the UO Forum. New 5.3.9: Any Officer may resign their position as an Officer by post in the UO Forum. If you voted yes to change 5.2.8 then I believe you should also vote yes in this poll… however… ============================================================================= Hawkeye’s defense of the 72 hour grace period (Charter 5.2.8 & 5.3.9) Perception vs. facts The current perception is that the 72 hour grace period promotes hasty decisions to resign. I would submit the facts paint a very different picture. For more than eight months 72 hour grace periods has been in place. During that time ten Regulars/Officers have resigned with only three rescinding their resignation. One of those Regulars now serves the UO community in the trusted position of Game Moderator. Drama vs. actual threads The current perception is that the 72 hour grace period promotes drama. On the contrary the person submitting his resignations has generally been very somber. Drama bombs have mostly been lobed in by others or the subject defending himself. I have provided links to the actual threads. If you have any doubt please read them. Do not cull out a single quote but read the threads in context. They are some of the most thoughtful threads on the Forum. Apparently Rich’s resignation led to considering these Charter changes. In his resignation thread he made three posts: 2012-04-03 @ 16:07 - Resigning. 2012-04-03 @ 16:58 – (krause quote “inb4 another last second revocation due that stupid charter amendment.”) If that amendment wasn't in place I would request this be executed immediately. 2012-04-04 @ 12:40 - I wasn't going to post here again, but due to Thawk's post I feel like I have to clear something up. I definitely did not resign because that map got voted in. That's just stupid, and I actually laughed-hard-at the fact that some people would believe that. This may qualify as drama but I can point you to hundreds of much hotter threads Summary The great thing about OFP/ARMA is how it broke the mold. Instead of running through rat mazes shooting stuff BI created a game that was open and challenges you to think. The great thing about UO is how it broke the mold. Instead of a typical paramilitary group the founders created a community based on a remarkable democracy. The first time I read the Charter I wanted to become a Regular. The reason I donate my time as a Forum Moderator is that I want to give back to the community I believe in. Yes there is too much drama, too much bravado and too many reactionary impulses. I believe no one is perfect and that extending grace is one of humanity’s most noble gifts or to borrow from Abraham Lincoln “the better angels of our nature”. Please vote no in this poll to remove the 72 hour grace period for Officers. Please vote no in the poll to remove the 72 hour grace period for Regulars and if you previously voted yes please consider changing your vote to no. Thank you. I will revise this post.
  2. Nou I absolutely agree with you. If a Regular or Officer abuses our community’s largess they deserve to lose Regular status. If for one second you think Trapdoor, Sickly or possibly Rich has done this then put up a poll for Regular removal. By putting up a poll you will ensure the integrity of the system. You can be sure if someone in the future feigns resigning and then is removed by a poll the precedent will be set. Seriously, if you “feel” Trapdoor, Sickly or Rich is abusing the system we together established you must put up a poll. The system is in place and you have my support. IAJT I do think for a variety of reasons TS and the Forums are not like real life and should be treated as such. You mention UO is a mature community. As the oldest Regular perhaps I can offer a unique perspective. I believe part of the problem with the 72 hour grace period is for some the lack of instant satisfaction in seeing a resignation. When someone resigns then we have to actually wait for the result. The more mature one is the less this lack of instant gratification is a bother. Patience is a benchmark of maturity. Grace is also a hallmark of maturity. Grace is something often missing in the UO community, something I think you would agree we could use more of. If you want UO to become a more mature community please vote no or change your vote to no.
  3. I authored Charter 5.2.8 and 5.3.9. Please allow me to defend the concept. At the time I noticed in the sometimes superheated UO forums Regulars and Officers make the decision to resign that in retrospect I believed they regretted. Chiefboats and tiggr both posted they wished such a provision was in place for them. I am by no means perfect and do not expect my fellow Regulars to be either. It is worthwhile to protect fellow Regulars from rash moves just as in the field of Arma we would lay down grazing fire It is worth checking the facts. In the 8 months this measure went into effect (2012-08-02) till this poll was posted (2012-04-04) there appears to have been 7 resignations with 2 changing their mind. (see below). I would contend that does not rise to the standard of “promoting immature and reactionary resignations”. I firmly believe in the case of any Regular or Officer resigning for the purpose of creating drama only to conveniently have a “change of heart” it is our duty as Regulars to put up a poll for their Regular removal. I do not believe it would be a hard poll to pass! Let us protect our fellow Regulars who are only guilty of a bad move and instead punish those whom deserve our ire. Please vote no to preserve this safety check. Resignations 2011-09-20, Trapdoor (rescinded) 2011-09-26, Fusionpoo 2011-09-26, Jaynus 2011-12-05, Rambo2 2011-02-02, Hund 2012-03-03, Sickly (rescinded) 2012-03-12, Fansadox 2012-04-03, Rich (pending, not counted) nb. It is like the safety on a gun. You could make the argument anyone who accidental shot off their foot deserved it… but wouldn’t you prefer having a safety. 5.2.8 and 5.3.9 protects a rash move and punishes the deliberate move.
  4. I wonder what effect all these map removal polls will have on mission making. Will a mission maker think twice before working on a map other than Chernarus, Desert, Takistan, Utes or Zargabad. If we start complaining about the lack of variety who do we have to blame?
  5. If this is simply a personality conflict then wasting the community’s time with this thread is wrong. If the removal of Regular status is based on egregious actions then prove it. I will never vote to remove Regular status from a player without documented “bans” that demonstrate a continuing harmful pattern without remorse. Without a Regular first being warned by “Banning” it seems premature to strip Regular status. As a Forum moderator I am also concern about the tone of Regular Removal threads. Too much drama and e-swagger. I believe these threads should be under the same rules as Ban threads… all posts require approval. nb. Larger text for older Regulars
